Pulwama Encounter: Hizbul Chief Naikoo Killed After Hours-Long Encounter. Top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo was killed today (Wednesday, 6 May), after a massive operation was launched by the security forces to trap him in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama region.

The counter-attack and encounter were started late on Tuesday, 5 May, the night continued till Wednesday afternoon. Mobile internet services in Kashmir were snapped on Wednesday, 6 May, morning, said PTI.

Riyaz Naikoo was a former Math teacher in a local school. He had a price of Rs 12 lakh on his head.

After the most popular face of Hizbul Mujahideen, Burhan Wani was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in the Kokarnag area of Anantnag on 8 July 2018. Zakir Musa had held the post of the outfit’s commander. But when Musa defected to form his own outfit, Riyaz Naikoo is said to be the one responsible for holding the Hizbul Mujahideen together.

Musa split from the Hizbul in 2017 and formed his own group called Ansar Ghazwatul Hind, which claimed to be the Indian affiliate of Al-Qaeda.

Musa was killed in the Dadsara area in Tral tehsil in an encounter with the security forces on 23 May 2019.

Meanwhile, two other militants were killed in a separate encounter in the Sharshali Khrew area of Awantipora where the encounter began late on Tuesday night.

A report in IANS said Riyaz Naikoo had come to his native home in Pulwama’s Beighpora village when the security forces including the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police, moved in quickly to seal all entry and exit points of the village.
